Termites:
Termites are tiny ant-like creatures that feed on cellulose, i.e., wood. If left unchecked, your wooden furniture can turn into sawdust without your knowledge.
Three main types of termites:
1. Subterranean termite
2. Drywood termite
3. Dampwood termite
1. Subterranean termites:
- Subterranean termites are the most destructive of all termite species.
- They live in soil.
- These termites have saw-toothed jaws, which make them damage the wood non-stop.
2. Drywood termite
- As the name indicated, these types of termites prefer dry wood to survive.
- They do not need moisture or dampness to survive.
- Drywood termites chew the cellulose from the inside and cause severe structural damage to the furniture and timbers.
3. Dampwood termites:
- Dampwood termites are often seen in decaying wood and moist areas.
- These termite species attack decaying wood in the soil but do not have direct contact with the soil.
- The habitat of these termites is fallen logs and tree branches in contact with the ground.
Caste system in a termite colony:
1. Queen:
- The queen is the largest member of the colony.
- Responsible for laying eggs and multiplying the termite colony.
- According to recent research, the queen can live up to 50 years.
2. King
- Responsible for mating with the queen.
- Helps in maintaining the colony.
3. Workers
- Workers are small and soft-bodied insects.
- Responsible for building tunnels and gathering food for the colony.
- Workers cause structural damage to the wood.
4. Soldiers
- Defends the colony from other predators.
- Soldiers have stronger mandibles.
Signs of termite damage:
Beware of these signs of termite damage
1. Hollow sound
- Wood sounds hollow when tapped
- Wood becomes brittle.
- Peeling of paint from the wooden furniture.
2. Mud Tubes
- Mud tubes are made of soil, wood particles, and termite saliva.
- Often seen on the walls.
3. Discarded Wings
- Small transparent wings near the colonies.
- This indicates the presence of a swarmer colony.
4. Termite Droppings (Frass)
- A pellet-like dropping confirms the termite presence.
- Frass resembles coffee grounds.
5. Clicking Sounds Inside Walls
- A clicking sound is heard while termites communicate by tapping their heads against the walls.
- This action is done for termite communication.
Anti-termite treatment:
Pre-construction anti-termite treatment:
Stage 1: Pre-construction treatment is done after the excavation of the trenches. The bottom and sides of trenches that are over 1 foot are treated with termiticides.
Stage 2: The next step is filling the chemical emulsion within the plinth area.
Stage 3: After the construction of the building, the soil present in the external perimeter of the building is rodded at 15 cm intervals, and anti-termite chemical is poured.
Post-construction anti-termite treatment:
Stage 1: In terms of the ground floor, holes are drilled at distances of 18 to 20 inches intervals, and the respective termiticide is applied.
Stage 2: Visible mud tubes are treated with spray to get rid of existing termites.
Reticulated piping system:
- This is a process of installing a linear, low-density pipe network along the perimeter of the building.
- Respective termiticides are injected at the junction box.
- This forms a barrier for termites from damaging the foundation.
